At one time Hillsboro Beach was only accessible by boat.

The peninsula is sandwiched between Deerfield Beach to the North and Pompano Beach to the South. Transcending the ordinary, this lavishly appointed Ocean to Intracoastal island stretches majestically for 3.2 miles of sandy coast line along the blue Atlantic and is only 900 feet at its widest point. No wonder that Hillsboro Beach is a favorite spot for those who are seeking relaxation and privacy.

Locally Hillsboro Beach is known as Hillsboro Mile or Millionaire's Mile. It has approximately 2000 residents, most of whom live at or are within a short walk to the ocean.

In 1922, Herbert L. Malcom (later Town Commissioner for ten years and Mayor for two terms) bought land next to the Inlet and built a school. In 1925 he turned the school into a hotel, which became the present Hillsboro Club. The town was originally incorporated in 1939 and remained inactive until 1947 when Ernest Wooler was elected the first Mayor. At that time the town had 17 voters, 9 private houses, 4 groups of rental cottages and apartments, and the Hillsboro Club.

Today, the Inlet with its famous Lighthouse, built in 1907 accounts for
approximately 1,405 voters (winter population 1,750, which almost doubles during tourist season)
